Phases of EMDR
-
Your clinician will speak to you about your unique experience and discuss how EMDR may work for you.
You will asked to complete some questionnaires that reflect your symptoms. This is so we have a baseline of what you are experiencing and can re-administer to assess progress/reduce symptoms.
Should it be required, your clinician will speak to your treating team to assess suitability for EMDR and coordinate care
-
A face-to-face session for you to get to know your psychologist. Your clinician will conduct a session of history taking and be considering appropriate EMDR targets
-
You might map out different memories and talk about what skills you have to help you manage when you feel distressed. All of this is collaborative.
Your clinician can spend some time planning for how to look after you post-EMDR sessions (particularly initial ones). You may create a safety plan and use some of your existing supports. If we know you are likely to be vulnerable after a session, we will plan accordingly.
-
Eye movements/bilateral stimulation. Your clinicians job here is to guide the process and help challenge your brain enough to keep one foot in the present and one foot in the past. Your job in these sessions is only to notice what is happening and tell the clinician as best you can. Some people notice changes in physical sensations, different memories arise, different thoughts arise, but also tell the clinician if you are getting distracted or finding the process hard so they can make adjustments. Your clinician will assist in reducing any distress that arises prior to the end of session. They will leave time for you to debrief. We want you to leave feeling calm and safe.
-
A final 30min session some weeks after your intensive to check on progress made and transition back to usual functioning
